Why Google Can’t Find Your Website: SEO Basics

You’ve spent time and resources designing a beautiful website, but there is one major problem: Nobody can find it. When you search for your services in Lagos or beyond, your competitors appear on page one, but your site is nowhere to be seen. This isn’t a matter of luck; it’s a matter of SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

If your website is invisible on Google, it’s usually due to one of these five foundational SEO pillars.

1. Google Doesn’t Know You Exist (Indexing)

Before Google can rank your site, it has to “crawl” it. If your site is brand new, Google’s bots might not have found it yet.

  • The Check: Go to Google and search site:yourdomain.com. If nothing shows up, your site isn’t indexed.
  • The Fix: Create a Sitemap and submit it to Google Search Console. This is essentially sending an invitation to Google to come and look at your content.

2. You’re Missing the “Keywords” People are Actually Using

Google is a giant matching machine. If a customer searches for “Professional Web Designer in Lagos” but your website only says “We Build Sites,” Google might not make the connection.

  • The Fix: Research the specific phrases your customers use. Sprinkle these keywords naturally into your Headings (H1, H2), your page titles, and your first paragraph.

3. Your “Technical SEO” is Broken

Google prioritizes websites that provide a good user experience. If your site has technical flaws, Google will penalize your ranking.

  • Common Issues: Slow loading speeds, broken links (404 errors), or a lack of mobile responsiveness.
  • The Secret Weapon: Schema Markup. This is a special code (like FAQ Schema) that helps Google understand exactly what your page is about, often resulting in those “rich snippets” you see in search results.

4. Lack of Quality Content

Google loves “Authority.” If your website only has a Home and Contact page with very little text, Google assumes you don’t have much to offer.

  • The Fix: Start a blog! Regularly posting helpful, original content—like “How to choose a payment gateway”—proves to Google that you are an active, helpful resource in your industry.

5. No “Votes of Confidence” (Backlinks)

In the eyes of Google, a link from another website to yours is a “vote.” If high-quality, reputable websites link to you, your “Domain Authority” rises.

  • The Fix: Focus on local SEO. Getting listed in reputable Nigerian business directories or being mentioned in local news can significantly boost your credibility.
